Land Is is the musical identity of Pittsboro musician and journalist Corbie Hill. After years playing loud and intense music with heavy prog outfit Alpha Cop, Corbie's luck turned substantially. He lost a parent, and then both he and his wife were diagnosed with cancer less than a year apart from each other. Through Land Is (and with the help of a talented core of musician friends) he navigates the terrifying circumstances of the past few years, slowly but surely processing a brutal run of luck -- and always finding hope within the darkness.
Sun Studies is a songwriting moniker featuring the wide-ranging baritone of Reid Johnson. Characters conveying false truths, current existential anxieties, and mental illness come to the forefront, carried by Johnson’s swooning voice and arresting melodies.
“spare, saturnine acoustic folk-rock bears along a striking vocal performance, heavily draped but surprisingly mobile. Johnson’s baritone has the stern majesty of Scott Walker, but it’s softened by the syrupy ache of Roy Orbison...”
